Pigeon decoys

Approx 10 - 12 years ago I purchased 20 1/2 shell pigeon decoys which were
very basic in detail and very lightweight. They "moved" beatifully in a
light breeze. The only problem with them was in a strong wing they tended to
blow off their mounting sticks which meant the stick got lost in the
stubble.

After quite a few years not shooting much I find myself with renewed
enthusiasim. Been pricing decoys (How much!) The cheap and cheerful decoys I
have no longer seem to be available, unless you know different. Ebay is
pretty much useless it seems, so links to reasonably priced effective decoys
appreciated.

Hello John,

Welcome to the group. There are a few links on my website to accessory shops
who stock decoys, some are a bit expensive though. Funnily enough I looked
through ebay tonight and there are quite a few pigeon decoys advertised on
e.bay.co.uk. btw if you know of any websites in Ireland I'm after some to
add to my site, preferably wildfowling sites.

Hope this helps

Dave the only wildfowling organisations I know of are the Strangford Lough
Wildfowlers. IIRC it is made up of 5 clubs. Comber wildfowlers, Ards
(Newtownards) wildfowlers, Killyleagh wildfowlers, Portaferry wildfowlers
and I think Downpatrick wildfowlers is the other one. I've goggled for club
websites without success, there are lots of references to the clubs though.

The National Trust for NI controls a lot of Strangford Lough and I "think"
the above clubs get their shooting access permits via the trust. They also
issue private permits as far as I know.

Hope this helps .... John

Hello John,

I tried to contact Strangford wildfowlers and Lough Foyle wildfowlers but
had no reply from them. I was hoping there may be others but it doesn't look
promising.

Thanks anyway

Prices start at around £3 each! these days.

I replaced most of my old decoys when I chap I knew was selling up. Think I
paid him £50 for 30 shells and 10 full bodies. 2 crows and 3 magpies and to
top it off 500 gamebore!

I must admit to being very happy.

One bit of advice, I have spent many years decoying and this year I invested
in a rotary pigeon machine made by a chap called Andy Moss off ebay.
To cut a long story short, I had about 30 decoys placed, 400 yds away a chap
had two decoys and a pigeon machine.
Birds were coming in to my pattern, then jinxing away to the machine.

Just spotted said decoys among a mixed item ebay auction.

They are the lighter grey shell decoys in the picture, anyone know what they
were called or if they are still available new?

Hello John,

dunno what they're called mate but I had ten of them, think I may
still have them somewhere but they were too shiny for my liking so I stopped
using them. The pigeons veered off on all but the dullest days when I used
them, I can only put it down to the shininess cos when I took them in and
carried on using the duller shell ones on their own the birds came in, this
happened on several occasions.

10 minutes with some fine steel wool would cure that ;-)

They were sold by Pinewood. I had fifty or so but coz they were brittle,
they started to fall apart.
BTW you should not attach pictures to your posts. This is a text only forum.

The new style are better than the old ones. The old style always reminded me
of feral pigeons.

Thanks for the Pinewood info. Sorry about the attached gif on my last post,
I've really no idea how it got there.
